Ready, Respectful, SafeA new way of thinking

Our Academy

I would like to extend a warm welcome to John Curwen Primary Academy. I am delighted to be the Headteacher here, and having taken up post in January 2019, I am excited about embarking on our journey to excellence.

We are an inclusive and happy school in Heckmondwike. I believe that a school serves the community around it and that the best possible education for each and every child starts with positive relationships with parents, carers and the local community. You will find me at the school gate each morning and my office door is always open- please do come and say hello!

Like John Curwen himself, I am passionate about the arts and believe that every child should have access to a holistic, engaging curriculum, grounded in British Values and taught by highly skilled staff. We feel strongly about giving children learning experiences that they will remember for the rest of their lives, including educational visits, theme days, inspiring visitors and engaging hooks in lessons, but also value the need for all of our children to leave our school ready for the next stage of their education and with high aspirations for their future.

That is why we place great value on Reading, Writing and Maths skills and aim to work in partnership with parents and carers to ensure that these are of a high standard across the curriculum.

At our school, we develop all of the skills that children need in our 21st Century world and believe that this is achieved most effectively through an education that incorporates our own values set, consistent with the values of the founders of the Co-operative Movement:

•Openness
•Honesty
•Social responsibility
•Caring for others
